Starting School

Starting school can be both an exciting and difficult time for children and families. At Prospect we try to make the process of starting school as easy as possible, while at the same time getting to know you and your child.
If you are interested in having a look around the school or having a discussion about what Prospect has to offer, do not hesitate in contacting Angela Thorogood, the Associate Principal of the Junior School. Email: aps@prospect.school.nz
We suggest you look at enrolling your child around six months before they start school. This allows us to better manage their transition into school and to manage class sizes. Before your child starts school we will arrange a meeting with the Principal as a way of getting some background information on your child and your family. We are keen to find out your child's strengths, interests, health concerns, experiences, concerns, and how they socialise. This is also an opportunity for the school to share with you our expectations of attendance, behaviour, and learning and for you to ask any questions that you may have. Prospect School does not have a zone.

Enrolling at School

When enrolling at Prospect you will need to bring with you a copy of your child's passport or birth certificate along with their immunisation record and, if necessary, any residency visas. Not having these documents should not hold your child back from attending school. Please talk to us if you are having difficulties sourcing these documents, as we are very keen to help. The enrolment form is not currently available online but packs and forms are available from the school office. If you are not able to collect one, please email the office, who will happily send you one in the mail - admin@prospect.school.nz

Transitioning into School

We suggest that children have at least four school visits before they start school. We usually run these on a Wednesday morning from 9:00am until 11:00am, but we are able to provide flexibility to accommodate your work or other commitments. If we have enough notice, we are able to arrange the new entrant teacher visiting your child at their early childhood centre. This allows the teacher to talk to your child, see them in their environment, look through their portfolio, and discuss your child's learning with the ECE teachers. The child will then know a familiar face when they arrive at school. The purposes of the school visits are to expose your child to some of the routines of the classroom, to meet and socialise with their future classmates, to prepare them for being in a new environment, and to build a relationship with their teacher.

If you need any further information about starting school, please do not hesitate in contacting us.
